Minimalist Style- Budget Friendly Decorating Tips

When styling your home more minimally you’ll want to create spaces that feel cozy, warm and alive, but minimalist at the same time. Comfort is just that…what feels good to you! So, today we’re going to decorate our rooms while keeping a friendly budget in mind.

I like to do shopping bans every now and again because it truly sets us up for the “finer” things in life. If you’re anything like me you can get lost in Home Goods (especially in an area that gets inventory a couple of times a week), and just randomly pick things up that you don’t necessarily need.

  • keep the budget in mind and stick to it : IE- $350 per room
  • create a vision board of what you want your room to look like

How To Style Like A Minimalist

I frequently state that you don’t have to become a full blown minimalist to reap the benefits of going more minimal in your homes, wardrobes and lifestyle.

It’s simply being more mindful of the items we’re bringing into the home that make us feel amazing whenever we glance at it.

  • opt for neutral earthy tones to craft a minimalist room
  • stick to the 3 pieces of furniture to a room rule
  • no tv’s in the bedrooms
  • have a home for everything that needs a home : IE- shoes need a basket or shoe rack, toys need a bin, clothing needs hamper, so on and so forth
  • never leave anything on the floors in terms of something not belonging there
  • rearrange the space until it feels A+
  • choose modern minimalist pieces of furniture that don’t take up much space
  • declutter daily until it becomes a natural habit

Investing in quality over quantity is something I’ve been mastering these past few years. I used to be a clearance snob and grab things I thought were a fantastic deal (and I could maybe use them someday). Someday never came and I ended up donated over half of everything I ever purchased.

Now I just focus on the items that I really need to make my home complete. Having minimal furniture is key.

Modern Minimalist Interior Styling

Grouping decor pieces together is a style of the past and every interior decorator uses this trick, but I’m not interested in seeing things bunched together. It all depends on how you want to work the space…for me, I like simplicity and placing one item alone on a side table or nothing at all on the kitchen countertop is plenty for me.

Things to avoid:

  • overthinking – this can be tricky because you want a room to look nice but if you’re anything like me and don’t really know how to style, keep the mindset simple as well
  • using everything you’ve got – just because you have the piece, doesn’t mean use it. if it doesn’t make sense, donate
  • keeping things that need to go
  • having a decorative item on every piece of furniture
  • placing television in bedroom or quiet areas
  • bulky furniture
  • oversized lamps, home decor pieces
  • artwork above beds
  • hanging a piece of art on every wall

Less is more in terms of placing things on things. If you get overwhelmed just looking at something, that means it’s time to declutter, minimize and keep the space simple.

I know we are speaking a little about budget here and when you are becoming minimalist it’s important to remind yourself that making use out of what you have is sometimes not an option.

In the long run you’ll be creating a space and saving more money on pieces that make sense versus things you already have.

Does that make any sense? I hope so.

Think of it this way…you aren’t clogging up wall space with decorative art and such, so you’re essentially saving a ton here. Artwork, frames and decor are expensive. Don’t think you have to hang something on every bit of empty wall space. It’s not necessary. Calm the tone on the walls. You’ll thank me as you get into this minimalism journey.
