It took me a long time before I started ‘really’ decluttering,..quite frankly because I didn’t think I owned a lot of stuff anyways. After I had been cleaning the same homes for clients for years, I started to realize that just cleaning every week wasn’t going to solve any problems. The ‘real’ problem was owning too much.

While it was certainly none of my business how much they had in their homes, I returned to my own place to scour through drawers, closets and rooms to see what I could eliminate. I made it a strict rule to tidy up my own home before cleaning anyone else’s because I knew I would be exhausted by the time we were done house cleaning for the day.
Simple Decluttering Tips
As I opened the drawers in my bathrooms and kitchen, I noticed items I would quickly toss. So I grabbed a small bag, put it around my arm and headed into each room for a few minutes each- looked-tossed-revisited the next day and did the same thing over and over again for 30 straight days.
- do the same small decluttering routine for 30 days straight- so if you open each drawer, look inside and decide what needs to be tossed or donated. if nothing needs to go, close the drawer and move onto the next. don’t give yourself too much time to think, just do the work
- empty the trash bins every single day even if there’s only one piece of tissue in it. this builds a better living habit that allows you to be more mindful
- train your brain to think like a minimalist. as you envision a clutter free home daily you will be able to then take action
Decluttering is not a one time event. It’s being mindful of the things we bring into the home, what we’re consuming on a daily basis and really tackling the task at hand while we do our cleaning routines to make life less stressful. Eliminating the overload is key.
If you’re looking to establish a healthy relationship with cleaning, decluttering is just part of the process. It takes time to craft the habit. You don’t have to be a full blown minimalist to reap the benefits of a clutter free home. You just have to know what to keep and what to get rid of, for good. And in many cases, that can include people too.

What are some ways you stick with decluttering routines?
